Critic Ratings & Tasting Notes
Vinum (93/100)
“Dark ruby, subtle roasted notes, cold fireplace, cola herb, blackberries, floral notes, playful; on the palate, silky, round, builds pressure, remains elegant, the tannins are fine, the acidity is lively, long finish. Will be enjoyable early.”
Decanter (93/100)
“Violets and blackcurrants on the nose, ripe and quite heady with an air of sexiness. Some caramel, cedar and dark chocolate too. Unctuous and ripe on the palate, with chewy tannins and lively acidity that really makes this zingy and focused. A good balance of ripe fruit, fine tannins and subtle power, finishing on liquorice, dark chocolate and toast. Structured and massy but in keeping with the vintage, not heavy or dense, yet packed with flavour. 2% Petit Verdot completes the blend. Aged 18 months in 50% new barrels. pH 3.62.”
James Suckling (95-96/100)
“Excellent depth. Though there is not much density, this exhibits outstanding cabernet character with paprika, tapenade, dark tobacco and black fruit. Medium- to full-bodied with fine-etched tannins. Great poise and elegance. Light on its feet but doesn’t need any more richness. 67% cabernet sauvignon, 26% merlot, 5% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot.”
Falstaff (93/100)
“Dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, subtle brightening on the rim. Fine combination of cassis, roasted aromas and nougat with undertones of blackberry confit, candied orange zest. Medium complexity, fresh cherries, red berry nuances, fresh and persistent, appears light-footed, mineral and salty on the finish.”
Jeff Leve – The Wine Cellar Insider (91-93/100)
“Chocolate-dusted currants, flowers, black currants, and crème de cassis form the nose. Medium-bodied, vibrant, lifted, and juicy, the red fruits are vivid and sweet, with a crunchy quality to the berries that resonates in the finish. The wine blends 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot. 13% ABV. Drink from 2028-2044.”
A second wine from the prestigious Mouton Rothschild terroir
The property
Château Mouton Rothschild, founded in 1853 by Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild, is an emblematic estate of Bordeaux, located in Pauillac in the Médoc. Spanning 91 hectares, it is the only one to have been reclassified as a first grand cru in 1973. Currently led by the descendants of Philippine de Rothschild, the estate stands out for its innovations, such as bottling at the château and its annual artistic labels. The vineyard, dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, benefits from an exceptional terroir, contributing to the worldwide renown of its wines.
The vineyard
Petit Mouton comes from the 82 hectares in production of the Mouton Rothschild vineyard in Pauillac. The vines, with an average age of 50 years, are planted on a terroir of deep gravels characteristic of the appellation. This combination of old vines and gravelly soils gives the wine its remarkable structure and Médoc typicity.
The vintage
The year 2024 began with a mild winter with abundant precipitation, followed by an early bud break at the end of March, a week ahead of average. After a relatively dry April, May saw significant rainfall with cool temperatures and moderate sunshine, increasing the pressure of mildew. Flowering and fruit set were marked by phenomena of shatter and millerandage on the early Merlots and Cabernets. The summer was mild with a progressive water deficit, allowing the harvest to begin on September 23 and end under the sun in early October.
Vinification and aging
Precise parcel-by-parcel vinification, respecting the characteristics of each grape variety. After fermentation, the wine is aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, 50% of which are new, allowing for a harmonious integration of the tannins and the development of its aromatic complexity.
Blend
Cabernet Sauvignon (67%), Merlot (26%), Cabernet Franc (5%) and a touch of Petit Verdot (2%).
