Jeff Leve – The Wine Cellar Insider (93/100)
“Deep in color, here you find flowers, blackberry, cassis and spice notes to get things started. Round, polished, rich and lush, the wine is packed with layers of ripe, dark, opulent fruits that already tastes and feels just great. This is so good, it is hard to believe it is a second wine . Enjoy it while waiting for the Grand Vin to mature. Drink from 2023-2037.”
Falstaff (92/100)
“Dark ruby-garnet, purple reflections, brighter rim. Nuances of ripe plums, black cherries, delicate hints of precious wood, nougat and candied orange zest, a hint of liquorice. Juicy, elegant, pleasant sweetness, ripe tannins, good freshness, already developed and drinkable, savoury finish.”
a Second Wine from Saint-Estèphe with lots of finesse
The property
Calon was the name given to the boat used in the Middle Ages to transport wood from one bank to the other of the Garonne. And at the beginning of the 18th century, the Marquis de Ségur, who received the estate as a wedding gift, added his name to it, thus giving birth to the label of this 3rd grand cru classé from Saint-Estèphe.
The Château Calon-Ségur remained in the Capbern-Gasqueton family throughout the 19th century, until 2012, when the property was bought by Suravenir Assurances, which continues to produce wines with an inimitable style marked by the seal of the appellation.
Château Calon Ségur has also become famous with its label adorning the bottles of the property. Since the 18th century, the heart has indeed been the symbol of the property and pays tribute to this phrase of the Marquis de Ségur: “I make wine at Lafite and Latour but my heart is at Calon”. For nearly three centuries, lovers of Château Calon Ségur continue to remain loyal to this iconic property of the appellation.
The vineyard
The vineyard of Château Calon Ségur extends over an area of 55 hectares, of which 48 hectares are in production. Planted on a thick layer of Garonne gravels dating from the Quaternary with a thin layer of lacustrine clay on top, the vines, which are 21 years old on average, give birth to a great Saint-Estèphe wine.
