A silky, beautifully complex red wine from Pessac-Léognan
The estate
Neighbouring the illustrious Château Haut-Brion, Château La Mission Haut-Brion has been one of Bordeaux’s most iconic names for centuries. Founded in the 16th century by the de Lestonnac family, the estate was later managed by the Lazarist priests. Today, under the ownership of Domaine Clarence Dillon and Prince Robert of Luxembourg, Château La Mission Haut-Brion continues to stand among the greatest wines in the world.
The vineyard
Located in the communes of Talence and Pessac, Château La Mission Haut-Brion covers 29 hectares of vines, with 25 hectares planted to red varieties and 4 hectares dedicated to white grapes. The vineyard is rooted in exceptional gravel soils over a subsoil of clay, sand, limestone and faluns, a shell-rich limestone. These distinctive terroirs give rise to some of the finest wines of Pessac-Léognan.
The wine
Produced in very limited quantities, La Chapelle de La Mission Haut-Brion is the estate’s second wine. Rare and refined, it offers a superb introduction to the unmistakable style of Château La Mission Haut-Brion. The wine takes its name from the Lazarist priests of La Mission, who cultivated vines on the estate from the 18th century onwards.
Critic Ratings & Tasting Notes
James Suckling (93/100)
“Currant and flower aromas galore. Very aromatic. Full-bodied yet tight and dense on the palate. A solid core of fruit and savory acidity. Very long and pretty. Drink in 2021.”
Wine Enthusiast (92/100)
“This is a finely perfumed wine with its dark tannins and juicy black-currant fruit. It has structure and a dense texture although this is filled with the bright acidity that gives the wine a lift. This will age well, so drink from 2021.”
Jeff Leve – The Wine Cellar Insider (89/100)
“Polished, and medium-bodied with clean fruit, this wine starts off with dark ripe berries and moves to a fresh cassis and peppered blackberry finish. Made from a blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28.5% Merlot and 15.5% Cabernet Franc, the wine reached 14.25% alcohol. 89-91”
