Ratings & Tasting Notes

Wine Enthusiast – (94/100)

“This is one of the three biodynamic estates that are owned by Gonzague and Claire Lurton. The wine is generous while also firmly structured in the style of this property. A dense, dry core surrounded by blackberry and black-currant fruit promises great things. It finishes clean, clear and crisp. Drink from 2024.”

Falstaff (92/100)

“Dark ruby-garnet colour with violet reflections and a subtle brightening at the rim. Delicate notes of vanilla, a hint of caramel and fine oak, with dark forest berry compote and an attractive bouquet.

Taut and freshly structured on the palate, with discreet extract sweetness and prominent tannins. Tobacco nuances appear on the finish. Still somewhat demanding, with good persistence, a spicy style, and needs time to develop.”

James Suckling (94/100)

“Plenty of spicy, savory oak influence comes to the fore above a vibrant array of cassis, blackberries and plums. The palate has rich and powerful tannins that roll sturdy and long, carrying plenty of deep cherry and plum flavors. Filled out nicely, but still more to come. Try from 2022.”

A great Pauillac wine with character

The Estate

The Libéral family managed Château Haut-Bages Libéral from the beginning of the 18th century. Over time, these true connoisseurs brought together some of the finest terroirs in Pauillac. Today, this Pauillac Grand Cru has been owned by the Villars family since 1983. They have restored Château Haut-Bages Libéral to its former glory by completely overhauling the winemaking facilities and steering vineyard management toward sustainable viticulture.

The Vineyard

Certified organic since 2019, Château Haut-Bages Libéral is currently undergoing conversion to biodynamic farming. The 30 hectares of this Pauillac vineyard are planted on Günzian Garonne gravel soils over a clay-limestone subsoil.

Vinification and Ageing

Vinification is carried out traditionally in concrete vats, with parcel-by-parcel selection. The wine is aged for 16 months in oak barrels, 40% of which are new.
